Hitachi Contract Intelligence

Hitachi Data Systems

We were engaged by Hitachi Data Systems Ltd (Hitachi) to develop the dashboard functionality for the Hitachi Content Intelligence (HCI) system for trial in the federal Department of Human Services (DHS).

The Client

Hitachi Data Systems (Hitachi) is a company that provides high-end computer data storage systems, software and services. One of these services, Hitachi Content Intelligence (HCI), is an end-to-end data processing and retrieval solution that automates the extraction, classification and categorisation of data residing in private, public and hybrid clouds. Its functionality makes it ideal for use by the Department of Human Services, where the vast volume of data, its disparate storage locations and the regulatory requirements surrounding data archival and access necessitates the use of an advanced indexing system.

The Problem

While HCI is a very capable and flexible system for the purpose at hand, it lacked a user-friendly method of visualising its findings and thus it made it was difficult for informed decisions to be made quickly in terms of data access and storage.

The Solution

We developed a modular, web-based dashboard that displayed actionable data insights on data volume, growth, type and distribution that act as the foundation for minimising storage costs and satisfying regulatory requirements around data access and archival. This allowed Hitachi to demonstrate the potential offered by the HCI platform to the DHS and provides a foundation for an expansion in the dashboard functionality by B&D in the future.

The HCI platform was connected to the DHS data repository, indexing over 30 million files with a combined storage volume of over 90 terabytes.

HCI combined with our dashboard allows clients to:

  • Discover and index the files in their system.
  • Understand the kinds of data in the system.
  • Distinguish between data that is evolving, stagnant or fresh.
  • Learn about the changes and interactions with files over time with a view to making informed management and operational decisions
  • Improve both and retrieval speed and utilisation of files by displaying alignments from metadata across a potentially large array.
  • Reduce costs by migrating stale/unused data to low-cost storage solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with retention requirements and increase transparency to facilitate a more streamlined auditing process.
